Chartwells would not admit any fault for their actions when they rehired her on Monday (Oct. 29th). Logically, if she had been at fault they would not have needed to rehire her. So, even though Chartwells has no concrete proof of her fault, they still maintain that they no longer trust her to handle cash and therefore they will be moving her to a more suitable position. It is yet to be announced. While we are happy for Ms. Betty,
it is offensive to everyone that Chartwells would act like this just to cover their… Remember that working as a cashier was what both Ms. Betty and students loved so much about her job; being able to say hello to students was what made everyone so happy. She will also be returning on final probationary warning.
There are 3 points to take from this:
A) She’s BACK, and that is a victory. Chartwells would have swept Miss Betty under the rug if nothing had been said by students and the community. This is due to your support.
B) It couldn’t have been done without the huge amount of student, press, and organizational pressure on UM administration to call for an investigation.
C) Chartwells actions surrounding both her original firing and her subsequent rehiring were offensive. Chartwells has implied that because she was rehired, workers in fact do have a voice on campus. We know that this is Not True. Chartwells Workers are currently organizing their own union so that firings like this do not happen in the future. So that they have a true voice on campus, please continue to support workers like Ms. Betty.
